Computers are a Necessity Today for Success In today's society, having access to a personal computer is an essential tool for people to obtain information, communicate with others, and for becoming empowered to educate themselves and others.
You and I Fit the Profile of a Candidate Donor or Volunteer If you're like me, you've grown up with access to computers and have now come to take this for granted. They are a mere fact of our existence just like any other appliance in the house. As the power of computing technology tends to double every 18 months, many of us tend to upgrade our own hardware and software at similar rates. Often we then have no use for the hardware we leave behind and it sits in a closet, collecting dust while we pretend that we may need it on a distant rainy day.
Many People Cannot Afford a Computer but Would Love our Retired Hardware At the same time, many people do not have computers of their own. If you're like me, you have benefited tremendously from owning a computer. Many of us earn more than a comfortable living through proficiency we have gained operating, configuring, or programming computers. It is this standard-of-living we enjoy that allows us to continually upgrade our hardware and software and let the old hardware rot in the corner.
Turn Paper Weights and Bit Rot into Brain Food! To help us avoid letting our retired hardware rot, this web site is here to provide a forum for people in the Atlanta metro area who would like to volunteer their time, expertise, and hardware and software for the purpose of putting technology into the otherwise empty hands of metro area children. This site also will serve as virtual community for civic-minded Atlantans who wish to improve their communities and the communities of others less fortunate. So, if you want to join in, click the register link and let's get started!
Helping Young People Educate Themselves As technologists, we understand from our experience how powerful a tool a computer can be in the hands of curious and enthuasiastic young people who understand the opportunity before them. Unfortunately, many children live in crime-ridden areas that are filled with problems that most of us don't see in our neighborhoods. This offers them little opportunity for a supportive and caring community outside their homes.
Having a computer of their own and the incentive to learn how to operate, configure, and program them on their own time can be a very empowering force for them to help improve their future in the same way it has for all of us.
